LECTURE 3 : PRODUCT

Product is actually the result or achievement of the actor with certain intention and act on a particular site by following the rule.

All products would also have the following elements :
  • form-space
  • nodes-paths
  • illusion

*This picture is taken from En. Wan's website.
Product could be attributed in the form of :
  • color
  • shape
  • size
  • scale
  • light
  • heavy
  • texture
  • pattern
  • glow
  • shine
  • finishes
  • proportion
  • transparent/translucent
While space would be structured as follow :

ILLUSION
A product may be also an illusion. Illusion is
an unreal image presented to the bodily or mental vision. It is a deceptive appearance, a false show or hallucination. In another words, it is actually a distortion of the senses, revealing how the brain normally organizes and interprets sensory stimulation.

LECTURE 2 : SITE (SCALE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT)

We learned about scale in this lesson. In the beginning of the lecture, En. Wan had shown us an example of scale which are some pictures from the galaxy to our earth, to a particular region on our earth, to a jungle in the region, to a leaf in the jungle, and at the end to the cell of the leaf.

From there we got to know that production is a factor of SCALE. It must be related to another measurement which is either small or large.

There are SEVEN levels of scales are used for the world :
1. object
2.interior
3.building
4.premise
5.urban
6.regional
7.global

NEW WORLD ORDER

The term New World Order (NWO) has been used by numerous politicians through the ages, and is a generic term used to refer to a worldwide conspiracy being orchestrated by an extremely powerful and influential group of genetically-related individuals (at least at the highest echelons) which include many of the world's wealthiest people, top political leaders, and corporate elite, as well as members of the so-called Black Nobility of Europe (dominated by the British Crown) whose goal is to create a One World (fascist) Government, stripped of nationalistic and regional boundaries, that is obedient to their agenda.

Their intention is to effect complete and total control over every human being on the planet and to dramatically reduce the world's population by two thirds. While the name New World Order is the term most frequently used today to loosely refer to anyone involved in this conspiracy, the study of exactly who makes up this group is a complex and intricate one. For further research sources, please see the side bar on the left.

According to the Wikipedia conspiracy theory, it refers to a purported conspiracy in which a powerful and secretive group is plotting to eventually rule of the world via an autonomous world government, which would replace sovereign states and other checks and balances in world power struggles. In this theory, many significant occurrences are said to be caused by a powerful secret group or groups. Historical and current events are seen as steps in an on-going plot to rule the world primarily through a combination of political finance, social engineering, mind control, and fear-based propaganda.

ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT

World government is the concept of a political body that would make, interpret and enforce international law. Inherent to the concept of a world government is the idea that nations would be required to pool or surrender (depending on point of view) sovereignty over some areas. In effect, a world government would add another level of administration above the existing national governments or provide coordination over areas national governments are not capable of adequately addressing as independent polities. The authority granted this level and how it relates to national governments and/or citizens is debated by both adherents and opponents to world government.

Some people see international institutions (such as the International Criminal Court, United Nations and International Monetary Fund) and various supranational and continental unions (such as Organization of American States, European Union, African Union, Union of South American Nations and Association of Southeast Asian Nations) as the beginning elements of a world government system. An organization comprising legislators from various nations known as Parliamentarians for Global Action have promoted ideas of democratic global governance, though such promotion has varied in its scope and intensity during the organization's history.

Built Environment : Assignment B (GEODESIC DOME)

Intension

Idea:

- To experience a real construction.
- To enable a practical learning space for actors to learn the actual construction.
- To be holistic, analyzing the whole system of believes.
- Learn to consider all factors before construction.
- To be simulative, reproduce features of something exist.

Decision Made:

- Rules given
- Site given
- Actors selected
- Product detail given

Group formed: 5 people with at least one different in major
Product to be established: A Geodesic Dome
Rules: Zero cost, Packaged, Prefabricated, Accommodate 5, Carry able by 3, Assembled in 30min.
Site: Inside of campus, starting from school of HBP.

Actor

5 members of the group work together to build up the dome.
Our members are :
  1. Chuah San Yu (leader)
  2. Frederick Tan Wooi Hean
  3. Loo Ruey Chih
  4. Wang ZhongHao
  5. Chen YiQian

Geodesic Dome Selected: 2V
Size of radius: 1 meter.

Wall constructs with 5 pentagons and 1 roof (pentagon also)

Pentagon: Formed by 5 sticks with 0.55 meters at the center and at the end
sticks is connected with another sticks with 0.62 meters.
The pentagon is actually formed by 5 isosecles triangles.

6 pentagons will merge with each other at each edge to form a geodesic dome.
After merging the pentagon’s wall, many equilateral triangles with 0.62 meters will be formed at each side of the triangles.

Rules
Source Collected: Zero cost. Material is gathered and cleaned. Ropes are collected at dock where fisherman used to tie boat knot. Smelly and is cleaned with fresh water. Kayu Mertam is collected from hearse and coffin shop where Chinese used them to construct sculpture to burn for dead people. The wood is being shaped into the size we want. Material is recyclable. Coconut ropes can be connected by using machine into long-chain coconut fiber ropes. The Kayu Mertam is a natural and biodegradable material; light and not heavy, merging into one piece by factory to form a wood platform. It’s packaged and formed by 6 pieces of pentagon wall. Can accommodate 5peoples and carry able by 3peoples. No steel material has been used, no rusting condition occur.

It’s prefabricated. The lifespan of the dome should be more than one year. The entire dome fulfills all the requirements listed.

Site
Actual Site: On the Domes Day, our actual site is located at number 3.

Report on Project Schedule

1st Meeting: Planning and Material Determination
Date: 27 August 2008
Data: Gather opinions from each member. Material selection has been made. Opinion analysis has been made and choice of selection is made.
Conclusion: Choose for wood material but not too heavy to enable transportation system. We search for wood in forest but failed. We sketch and calculate the size of the dome. We found out that 2V dome is suitable for us and we decided to use the appropriate scale that we have calculated for our dome.

2nd Meeting: Practical Building 1
Date: 3 September 2008
Data: Material gathered. Practice on merging the product and design the structure.
Conclusion: Finally one of our members passed a coffin shop and she sees lights. We decided to use the wood that those material that has been used by that shop. The shopkeeper agreed to provide us excessive wood material. After gathered up all the material, we started to build our foundation for the dome. We accomplished the dome foundation within 4 hours.

3rd Meeting: Practical Building 2
Date: 5 September 2008
Data: Structure confirmation has been made.
Conclusion: We started to make our roof and finally combined them together to form a dome. Sugar bags are collected and sealed them up into one piece. We are trying to form a large piece of shelter for the dome. We succeed.

4th Meeting: 30 Minutes Training
Date: 9 September 2008
Data: Trial on overall project. Prefabricated pieces are formed into one in time.
Conclusion: We practice on how we build the dome in time. We separate the job evenly. Final practice has been made.

Five of us (actor) squeeze into our dome (product)

Our completed dome on Domes Day.

LECTURE 1 : PRODUCTION OF BUILT ENVIRONMENT

*This is taken from En. Wan's website

Built environment refers to the man made surroundings that provide the setting for human activity, ranging from the large-scale civic surroundings to the personal places.

There are SIX important elements of production which consist of :

1. INTENTION

2. ACT

3. PRODUCT

4. ACTOR

5. RULE

6. SITE

INTENTION
It is the idea from mind. It is about mission or objective of someone to produce the built environment. Intention is the first step in the progress of production. A target in life is a psychological necessity. A man without an intention may be likened to a ship without a rudder.

ACTOR
Actor is the one who takes part in the production. Actor plays the main character in the built environment like building designer and landscape architect.

ACT

It is actually what we have done and also the steps taken in the progress of production.

PRODUCT
The achievement at the end of the process.

RULES
Is about law or regulation to the built environment. Such as planner, they have guide of rules or law.

SITE
Site is a suitable place or location where the actors want to build what their plan.

To have INTENTION,we must have knowledge. Knowledge is necessary to build up the intention. And the knowledge is the product of certain ACT to gain the knowledge which must involve the listening, seeing, and differentiating. While the RULE is actually an ideology and it is simply, what is right is right, and what is wrong is wrong. What is right or wrong is all determined and depend on us as the ACTOR (the source of ism which underlies our intention).

The Production of Built Environment : USM 37th Convocation (From Event to Oval)

There are 6 basic elemental factors in production of built environment :
1. Site
2. Intention

3. Act
4. Actor
5. Rule
6. Product

Let us discover and define it from the running of convocation of USM from event to oval.

First of all, site is defined as the suitable place or a location on earth for the production to happen. And this is the site for the convocation which near the DTSP field.

These were the product
during the convocation on 15th and 16th of August,2008.

18th of August, uninstall of the setting of convocation.
Here, the actor is playing a very important role in the production of built environment.
The production cannot go on without the actor.

Their intention of the actor in the progress is to uninstall all the temporary shops and stalls during the convocation and turn the site into its original sight.

That was how the actor act in the progress.

Finally, this is the product in the end. Everything is back to the original.
